Understanding GST in India
Goods and Services Tax (GST) is India's unified indirect tax system introduced on July 1, 2017. It replaced a complex web of central and state taxes (VAT, service tax, excise duty, etc.) with a single, streamlined tax. GST is a destination-based consumption tax collected at every stage of the supply chain.
How GST is Calculated
There are two scenarios:
-
Adding GST (Exclusive)
GST Amount = Original Price × (GST Rate / 100).
-
Removing GST (Inclusive)
Original Price = GST-Inclusive Price / (1 + GST Rate / 100).
Components of GST
-
CGST (Central GST): Goes to the Central Government. Applied on intra-state supplies.
-
SGST (State GST): Goes to the State Government. Applied on intra-state supplies alongside CGST.
-
IGST (Integrated GST): Applied on inter-state supplies and imports. Distributed between Centre and States.
